    o Rest in the shade as often as you can.

    o [Warning: If your doctor generally limits the amount of fluid you drink or has you on water pills, ask him how much you should drink while the weather is hot.]

    o When dealing with temperatures that are 90+ Degrees F its best to take a cool bath or shower, though an electric fan feels comfortable it does not prevent heat-related illness.

    Have you ever been told that you're overtraining? I bet those same people that have told you that you're overtraining are the same people that tell you to work each muscle group only once per week to failure every set.

    Actually, I am fed up with people telling others that they are overtraining without knowing anything about the person. All they see is their weight lifting schedule and the number of exercises and sets they are doing. I see it over and over on bodybuilding and fitness forums and message boards.

    Do not listen to the so called message board and forum experts that argue with each other and put each other down. I'm sure you've seen it before on many of the top message boards and forums. I took advice from the people that simply 'sounded' like they knew what they were talking about. Of course, they didn't. I had to experiment myself for years before finding the truth.

    Why Someone Doesn't Know If You're Overtraining...

    No one can look at your weight training program and tell you that you're overtraining or that you're doing too much. Why is this? Because there are too many factors that go into the overtraining equation. Every single person out there is different. Two people can do the exact same thing... One may overtrain while the other may not. We are individuals with different lives. No one can tell you that you're overtraining!

    Here are the factors that affect your recovery from workouts:

    1) Fluid Intake

    2) Diet and Nutrition

    3) Cardio Exercise

    4) Weekly Program Adjustments

    5) Weight Lifting Intensity

    6) Weight Lifting Frequency

    7) Pre and Post Workout Nutrition

    8) Supplements

    9) Sleep

    10) Stress in Your Life

    11) Genetics

    12) Levels of Conditioning

    The factors affecting recovery from workouts that I've listed above are still only a few... The list goes on and on. Your entire life and what you do each and every day affects your recovery from workouts and your muscle building and fat burning results. No one will ever be able to tell you that you're overtraining. It's something you're going to have to watch out for yourself.

    If I told you that you could workout 7 days per week without overtraining, would you still call me crazy? Because you can do exactly that and not overtrain. You would definitely need to know what you were doing, but you could pull it off and make good progress. I don't recommend 7 days per week as I am just trying to make a point.

    What's my point? My point is no one and I mean no one can tell you that you are doing too much without taking into account all the factors that affect recovery between workouts. They need to know how your progress is coming along, how much you've been sleeping, the stress levels in your life, do you stretch, do you perform low or high intensity cardio, do you go to failure every set of every workout, etc. So never listen to someone who tells you that you're overtraining without taking into account all the factors.

    How To Know if You're Overtraining...

    All you need to do is monitor your strength gains. If you are making strength gains each workout, you are not overtraining. If you are having trouble making strength gains, this also does not mean you are overtraining.

    If you're making progress in the gym in terms of building strength, do not worry about overtraining.

    When progress slows or comes to a halt, you should ensure you're doing everything else right. You must be eating enough of the right foods, drinking the correct amount of water, getting plenty of sleep, decreasing stress in your life, stretching, etc. Small and simple changes can get those strength gains started again. And strength gains lead to muscle gains.

    If you have soreness in a muscle group for more than 4 to 5 days, you overdid it at your last workout. You may need to take an extended break if the soreness persists... especially if you've been lifting weights consistently for more than a few months. Take a week off and let your body recover before starting your next weight lifting program.

    The required break from weight training after each cycle allows you to make amazing progress each and every cycle. The break allows your muscle mass to decondition from any load which allows you to make amazing progress the following cycle when following an intelligently designed weight lifting program.
